Weather update for Saturday afternoon: A chance of freezing rain before 3pm, then freezing rain likely, possibly mixed with drizzle between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m., then a slight chance of freezing rain after 4 p.m. Cloudy, with a high near 33. East wind 8 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 22 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New ice accumulation of around a 0.1 of an inch possible.

With highs often in the 50s and occasional lows in the teens, the winter of 2024-2025 so far has been relatively balmy for eastern Kansas. However, according to the U.S. National Weather Service (NWS), that is about to change on Saturday.

With a winter storm approaching with expectations of freezing rain and snow mixed with brutally cold temperatures over the weekend and into next week, area grocery, farm supply and hardware stores are trying to keep up with demand for weapons to fight against what is expected to be a nasty bout of winter weather.

Depending on the amount of ice collecting on power lines and trees, it could also turn into a weekend - or longer - without electricity.

On Thursday, trucks from the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) were spraying salt brine on the state highways in preparation for hazardous driving weather.

On Sunday the temperature remains steady in the low 30s as snow, freezing rain and sleet move into the area. In the afternoon, wind will shift out of the northeast as temperatures plunge and the snow begins in earnest by about 3 p.m. Chance of precipitation remains at 90% and as much as 4 inches of snow is expected.

Occasional blowing snow and blustery winds are forecast for Sunday night as the temperature plunges 4 degrees.

On Sunday the freezing rain and snow mix in the morning is expected to change to all snow in the afternoon. Blustery wind conditions are expected to blow the snow throughout the afternoon, and blustery winds and blowing snow are expected to continue throughout the night into Monday morning with a low of 4 degrees.

The skies clear on Monday, but the high for the day is expected to be about 15 degrees. Highs in the mid-teens and lows near zero are expected throughout most of the week.
