A couple of sunny days has allowed state and county road crews to get most of the paved roads in the area in good condition. However, gravel roads remain ice-packed for the most part, a problem that could be eased with a high Thursday, Jan. 9, in the mid-30s. (Journal file photo)

As most of the paved roads in Linn County have returned to near normal driving conditions, Prairie View, Jayhawk and Pleasanton school districts plan to reopen Thursday after a two-day extension of winter break. However, gravel roads remain ice-covered and treacherous in places.
Superintendents from all three districts said that while the schools would be open, they understood that some parents may not yet feel comfortable putting their children the on buses.
"We recognize that some roadways remain affected by the recent winter storm," Pleasanton Superintendent Don Epps posted on the USD 344 website. "If you feel road conditions are unsafe, we fully support your decision to keep your student at home. All absences for this reason will be excused. Additionally, students arriving later in the day will not be marked tardy."
Epps went on the post that the buses would leave at the regular times and that there might be delays in picking students up and delivering them home again.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the temperature Thursday morning is expected to be 10 degrees, up from near-zero temperatures on Wednesday morning, Sunny weather and highs in the mid-30s on Thursdays should accelerate further melting by midday.
However, clouds move back in for Thursday afternoon, and the NWS is predicting. a 60% chance of snow between 3 p.m. and midnight. Accumulations up to 3 inches possible, according to the forecast.
