BURLINGTON – What a wild first half of football! After dropping their opening game of the season to Santa Fe Trail, the Wildcats (2-2) had rattled off two straight victories, including a 20-14 win over Baldwin. The visiting Prairie View Buffalos (3-1) were coming off of their first loss of the season, 35-20 against Wellsville. The Buffalos appeared ripe for an upset. However, that was not to be.

Both teams showed out on offense. Junior Parker Schwarz started things off with a 49-yard gallop for a touchdown. Burlington answered almost immediately with a 61-yard touchdown pass. Schwarz took off again, this time for 50 yards, to give the Buffs a 14-6 lead. After a punt, the Buffalos had the ball again and drove the distance of the field, with junior Josh Goodwin ramming one home for the offense. Burlington was not done, getting on the scoreboard with a 61-yard kick return for a touchdown, giving the home team fans some energy.

Josh Goodwin scored his second touchdown to start the second quarter. With the visitors now up 28-12, the Wildcats had the chance to shine. They used a nice drive to get on the board with a 5-yard touchdown run, followed quickly by another long pass, this time heading 56 yards for the score. They were not going down without a fight.

Buffalo senior Elijah Williams remained a key player on both offense and defense against the Wildcats. He gained 17 yards on one of two rushes and was credited with two tackles and five assists. The Buffalo offense churned out nearly 500 yards on the ground during the game. (Journal file photo)

The Buffalos worked the ball down the field, and senior quarterback Wyatt Attebery put it in the end zone from 8 yards out. Burlington wasn’t done, and they finished the first half with one final touchdown pass, going into the locker down 35-34 to the Buffalos.

The second half was a different story. The Wildcats did not score again while Schwarz rang the bell two more times. Midway through the third quarter, he torched the defense, going 82 yards for a huge touchdown. Finally, early in the fourth quarter, he snagged his fourth rushing score of the game, this time from 12 yards out. The final of the ball game was Prairie View 50, Burlington 34. Parker Schwarz retook the state rushing lead with 997 yards in just 4 games, over 20 yards per carry, after being held in check by Wellsville last week.

Prairie View will host the Humboldt Cubs for the Buffalos homecoming game on Friday, Oct. 4. Humboldt (4-0), a district rival for the Buffalos, comes off a win over Eureka last week
