MOUND CITY – Mound City will be celebrating the Yuletide with two events, both on Saturday, Dec. 7.

The morning begins with “Breakfast with the Grinch” at the American Legion building at the Linn County Fairgrounds just north of city limits on Kansas Highway 7. The event is sponsored by the city of Mound City.

This is a change from the past few years when the city's celebration was in the evening at the city's amphitheater with the lighting of the Mayor's Christmas tree

Breakfast – which includes biscuits and gravy, eggs and sausage – will be served from 7 to 10 a.m. Suggested donation for the meal is $5 per person. The Grinch will arrive at 8 a.m. and will hang out until 11 a.m.

The action switches to the 4-H building on the fairgrounds beginning at 9 a.m. In addition to the build-a-penguin stuffed-animal workshop, families can snack on cookies and drinks while they do other crafts until 11 a.m.

Later in the day, Christmas in the Park will kick off at at 4 p.m. and run until 7 p.m. at the Mound City Historical Park at Main and Seventh streets.

At 4 p.m. registration begins for the gift giveaway for kids ages 2 to 18 at 4:30 p.m. A live Nativity at the barn located on park grounds will run from 4 to 6 p.m. with a special “Birthday for Jesus” event at 5 p.m.

From 5 to 6 p.m., the handbell choir will perform and community caroling will take place at the schoolhouse. And from 6 to 7 p.m. Santa will visit the schoolhouse.

Throughout the event, sponsored by the Mound City Historical Society, cookies and hot chocolate will be served at the house at the park.

The live Nativity scene will return to the Mound City Historical Park's barn this year. (Chesney Thomas / special to the Journal)
