MOUND CITY – On Monday, Nov. 4, Linn County Health Department Director Amanda Snyder updated the commissioners on the past months numbers and upcoming events.
Snyder told the commissioners that there had been 288 appointments at the health department during the month of October.
She told the commissioners that a new breastfeeding newsletter had been started and will be sent out monthly to pregnant and breastfeeding clients. It will also be posted on the health department’s social media and eventually on the website.
Snyder said that this week the health department nurses would be giving flu shots to Jayhawk and Prairie View students.
She said that last Friday, the first mobile women, infant and children (WIC) health clinic was held at Blue Mound and 11 clients were served. The mobile unit will be back in Blue Mound again in December.
Snyder told the commissioners that the Fall initiative for WIC is promoting handwashing. She explained that this was a part of the nutrition education plan. So, for every family that comes in for an appointment, they are given a bottle of hand soap with a tag on it that explains the importance of washing your hands and how you should wash your hands. It is mostly geared to the age group of 0 to 5 because they are germy and it’s germ season.
Snyder said that the health department is in the process of planning a cooking class that demonstrates how WIC benefits can be used during the holidays.
She informed the commissioners that they are also working with the Alzheimer’s Foundation to become certified Alzheimer’s educators. This will allow the health department to provide education and support to Linn County citizens.
Snyder said she was in the process of updating the health department page on the Linn County website to add more resources and links to different educational resources or videos.
Last month, Snyder had asked about evaluations for the health department employees and was again asking whether the commissioners had scheduled a time for the evaluations.
Commission Chair Danny McCullough answered that they had not been scheduled yet because things had been pretty hectic.
“They need to be sooner rather that later,” said Commissioner Jason Hightower.
“We’ll get on it,” said McCulllough.
