Freezing rain plays havoc with travel, snow expected later on Sunday

More freezing rain is expected through Sunday morning with the National Weather Service (NWS) predicting up as much as 0.6 inch total ice accumulation by the time sleet and snow showers kick in on Sunday afternoon.

Ice on paved roads made travel treacherous during the afternoon and evening on Saturday, prompting many churches to cancel in-person services. Those churches that already provide live-streaming on Facebook or YouTube notified congregations of plans to move to services via the internet. (See related story by clicking here.)

Meanwhile Linn County first-responder dispatch reported several accidents that were likely the result of slide-offs or poor visibility. A vehicle traveling on 300 Road between Quail and Read roads apparently was involved in an accident that involved cattle that were out. All of the airbags in the vehicle deployed.

Dispatch also reported another accident on U.S. Highway 69 north of Pleasanton that involved a slide-off into a marsh area. According to the report at least one man received injuries in the accident that involved an infant as well.

With early morning lows bottoming out in the low 20s on Sunday and highs struggling to reach 32 degrees F, roads are expected to remain slick through much of the day. An expected 1 to 3 inches of snow are expected to fall Sunday afternoon and evening with blustery winds out of the north plunging the temperature to a low of 6 degrees on Monday morning.

Schools in all three Linn County school districts – Prairie View, Pleasanton and Jayhawk – won't have school on Monday, Jan. 6, because of previously scheduled in-service days for teachers.
