MOUND CITY – The Linn County Commissioners heard weekly reports from the fire department and ambulance services on Monday, Nov 4.
Linn County Fire Chief Randy Hegwald reported that there were 14 calls during the past week. These calls consisted of one fire call, seven rescue and emergency medical service incident calls, two hazardous conditions (no fire), two service calls, one good intent call and one false alarm and false call.
Hegwald pointed out that half of the calls were for car vs. deer accidents.
At the recommendation of Hegwald, the commissioners:
• Hired Blake Freeman for a firefighter position at Parker ,making that station have eight of the approved 15 positions pending all pre-employment screening. Hegwald said that Freeman had previously been a firefighter at Parker but had moved away. Hegwald also said that Freeman would have been the ninth firefighter at Parker, but one Parker firefighter had just moved to La Cygne.
• Purchased two new pickup trucks to replace the 2015 and 2017 SUVs that Hegwald and assistant fire chief Brian Shroyer drive. The trucks will cost $53,750 plus nearly $21,300 each for the upfitting. The total will be nearly $139,600. Hegwald discussed moving the old SUVs to replace Excursions at two of the stations. Grill guards were also added to the pickups.
The money for one pickup will come out of the emergency management fund, which has a balance of nearly $139,600 and the other pickup will come out of the fire department’s special equipment fund which has a balance of nearly $707,900, not counting the last payment for the tender.
Hegwald told the commissioners that the used tender truck they had purchased was just about ready to be picked up.
Hegwald said that the fire department would be doing a walk-through at the Evergy plant and Fabcon.
