Powerful Tools for Caregivers

K-State Research & Extension, Marais des Cygnes District, is partnering with the Mound

City Library to present Powerful Tools for Caregivers – an educational program designed to help family caregivers. The series of six classes gives participants the tools needed to help take care of themselves while caring for a relative or friend.

Classes will be held once a week, each Tuesday from 1:30 – 3:00 p.m., beginning

Sept. 10 and ending Oct. 15. Topics covered will include techniques to help

reduce stress; better communicate with your loved one, other family members and doctors;

reduce guilt, anger and depression; take care of yourself; make tough decisions and problem

solve. The program is designed to help the family caregiver, not professional caregivers.

Nationwide, more than 43.5 million people have served in the role of a family caregiver

in the past 12 months. Some caregivers help with tasks such as shopping, food preparation,

general household chores and transportation. Other caregivers assist with medications, feeding, dressing, grooming and bathing. In addition, the majority of caregivers spend time researching care services or information on disease, coordinating and attending doctor’s appointments and manage financial matters.

“Many times we are placed in the role of a caregiver with little or no warning,” states

Kathy Goul, Family and Consumer Science Agent. “Trying to balance the demands of everyday life, along with the challenges of caring for a loved one can be overwhelming. This series is designed to help equip the family caregiver with tools that will help you care for yourself so that you may, in turn, better care for your loved one.”

The class will be taught by K-State Research & Extension staff: Family & Consumer

Science Agent Kathy Goul and Community Wellness Program Manager Kaitlin Bruner. The

class will be held at the Mound City Library, 630 W. Main Street, Mound City. For more

information about the class, contact Kathy Goul at 913-294-4306 or by email at kgoul@ksu.edu.

To register for the class, call the Mound City Library at 913-795-2788. Class size is limited.
