Checking in on Mental Health

By John Smart

For many of us mental health is difficult to talk about, and sometimes we can suffer in ways that no one can see. As we push on and hide our struggles from the world, inside our pain begins to manifest into strained relationships, isolation, fatigue, etc. How do we begin to heal? How can we change the cycle of sadness, fear, and chaos?

Lives are often disrupted by major transitions, loss, feeling down, having relationship trouble, experiencing anxiety, or problematic usage of substances. For as overwhelming as these experiences feel, there are many pathways towards healing and growth. These pathways may include things like restarting enjoyable and meaningful routines, building (or rebuilding) relationships, or connecting with spiritual supports. Therapy can play a significant part in discovering your individual pathway.

My role as a therapist involves providing a safe, non-judgmental space to discuss coping with painful experiences, identifying individual strengths and supports, and reinforcing the process of integrating strengths and supports into a pathway of healing and growth.

Taking the first step is difficult, but many individuals experience relief after taking that first step. By developing and following an individualized recovery path you can dramatically reduce many of your symptoms and enjoy life to its fullest.
